Billy Graham speakingBilly Graham on Jesus Christ:

"I'm counting totally and completely on the Lord Jesus Christ, and not on Billy Graham. I'm not going to heaven because I've read the Bible, nor because I've preached to a lot of people. I'm going to heaven because of what Christ did."

Billy Graham Offers to Help Mitt Romney

Billy Graham meets with Mitt Romney.

93-year-old Billy Graham met with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney at Graham’s home in Montreat, N.C., on Oct. 11, promising to “do all I can to help you. And you can quote me on that.”

Graham has a long history of meeting with presidents—every one back to Truman, including Barack Obama in 2010—and candidates—including John McCain in 2008.

While Graham hasn’t always been neutral, he has expressed regrets about being too involved in politics. In a 2011 interview with Christianity Today he regrets not spending more time with his family and, “I also would have steered clear of politics.”

While not an official endorsement of Romney, it’s as close as Graham comes. An official statement (PDF) included glowing remarks about Romney:

It was an honor to meet and host Governor Romney in my home today, especially since I knew his late father former Michigan Governor George Romney, whom I considered a friend. I have followed Mitt Romney’s career in business, the Olympic Games, as governor of Massachusetts and, of course, as a candidate for president of the United States.

What impresses me even more than Governor Romney’s successful career are his values and strong moral convictions. I appreciate his faithful commitment to his impressive family, particularly his wife Ann of 43 years and his five married sons.

Graham also prayed for Romney and urged Americans to vote for candidates who support biblical values:

I will turn 94 the day after the upcoming election, and I believe America is at a crossroads. I hope millions of Americans will join me in praying for our nation and to vote for candidates who will support the biblical definition of marriage, protect the sanctity of life and defend our religious freedoms.
